Here at R3 Data Recovery Hospital, wiping drives is part of our day to day process. When we set out to do a recovery every device gets assigned an image drive where a sector by sector clone is made, however once the recovery is done we have to wipe the image. So wiping drives happens all the time here.
We also offer a drive wiping service for any company or home user that has any hard drives lying around that they no longer need but they require all the data wiping off the drive. We provide certificates of wiping so that the customer can see that the drive has been wiped and by which method.
Some people may think that formatting the drive is enough to get rid of the data, however any one with data recovery experience will know that even though the drive has been formatted it is still possible to recover the data that was on the device.
Drive wiping is also the most strenuous task that a hard drive can go through as the device has to access every single sector on the drive to make sure that it is fully wiped. This will show whether the drive is in a failing state or not i.e. whether the drive has bad sectors or a failing head for example.
So fully wiping the drive will prove that the drive is in a good state and can be used for imaging purposes if we need it, it also shows that it can be used as a storage device without possible imminent failure.
